4.5.2.2 Environmental Impacts from On-Site Separation of Dry Recyclables

In order to evaluate the environmental effects of the on-site recycling scheme for dry recyclables in the Augustenborg residential area, a life cycle assessment was performed. The overall questions in the assessment were related to the environmental benefits from the current system and the potential benefits with an optimization of the recycling behavior (Fig. 4.14). Data from waste composition analyses performed in the area were used as input data in the assessment. Thus, site-specific data was used both in relation to waste composition and on-site separation ratios for different types of dry recyclables. In order to assess environmental impacts from recycling and treatment processes, it was assumed that all materials were recycled in Sweden. Thus, transportation distances to bigger recycling plants, as well as emission data from Swedish plants on material recycling and treatment, were used (Bernstad et al. 2011).
